The Machame route is one of the most beautiful and most popular hike tours on Kilimanjaro. The trail starts in the ( jungle) rainforest with views of Mount Meru, Shira Ridge as well the main summit of the Kilimanjaro – Kibo peak. The Machame route contains more steep passages at higher than Marangu or Rongai routes and requires better fitness and determination from the mountain climber, but it’s worth it. The terrain is diverse and interesting and the views are spectacular. This route joins the longer Lemosho route  after Shira II

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Moshi

  • Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO).
  • Transfer to a hotel in Moshi for an orientation and equipment check.
  • Overnight in Moshi.

Day 2: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

  • Transfer to Machame Gate and complete park entry formalities.
  • Start the trek through the lush rainforest.
  • Hike to Machame Camp.
  • Overnight camping.

Day 3: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

  • Continue the ascent through the rainforest, reaching the heath and moorland zone.
  • Arrive at Shira Camp with stunning views.
  • Overnight camping.

Day 4: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp

  • Trek across the Shira Plateau, offering panoramic vistas.
  • Descend to Barranco Camp, passing the Lava Tower en route.
  • Overnight camping at Barranco Camp.

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

  • Climb the Barranco Wall, a challenging but exhilarating section of the route.
  • Proceed to Karanga Camp, with fantastic views of the southern ice fields.
  • Overnight camping.

Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

  • Ascend to Barafu Camp, the last stop before the summit.
  • Rest, hydrate, and prepare for the summit attempt.
  • Overnight camping at Barafu Camp.

Day 7: Summit Day – Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and descent to Mweka Camp

  • Begin the summit attempt at midnight, reaching Uhuru Peak at sunrise.
  • Descend back to Barafu Camp and then to Mweka Camp.
  • Celebrate your achievement!
  • Overnight camping at Mweka Camp.

Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate and return to Moshi

  • Descend to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificates.
  • Transfer to your hotel in Moshi for a well-deserved rest and celebration.
  • Overnight in Moshi
