The Marangu Route is one of the most popular routes for Kilimanjaro climbing due to its relative ease compared to other routes and the comfort of hut accommodations. Often called the “Coca-Cola Route” because of its popularity, this route offers a good balance of scenic beauty, moderate difficulty, and shorter trekking distances. This 6-day itinerary ensures proper acclimatization and enhances the chances of reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa.

Tour Plan

Arrival:

  • Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport.
  • Transfer to your hotel in Moshi (about 45 minutes to 1 hour drive).
  • Meet your guide and trekking team for a pre-climb briefing.
  • Relax and prepare for the climb ahead.

Morning:

  • After breakfast, drive to the Marangu Gate (about 1.5 hours).
  • Register and check in with park authorities.
  • Start your trek from Marangu Gate (1,860 m) to Mandara Hut (2,700 m).
  • The trek begins through the rainforest, with plenty of wildlife, vibrant plant life, and possibly glimpses of monkeys.

Afternoon:

  • Set up camp at Mandara Hut, where you can relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

Morning:

  • After breakfast, continue your trek to Horombo Hut (3,720 m).
  • This section takes you out of the rainforest and into the moorland zone, with expansive views and a more rugged terrain.

Altitude Gain: 2,700 m (Mandara Hut) to 3,720 m (Horombo Hut)

Afternoon:

  • Arrive at Horombo Hut and take time to relax.
  • Enjoy panoramic views of the Kilimanjaro’s peak and glaciers.
  • This evening is a good opportunity to hydrate and prepare for the next phase of the climb.

Morning:

  • After breakfast, hike from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4,700 m), which sits just below the summit of Kilimanjaro.
  • The terrain changes to alpine desert, with sparse vegetation and rocky surroundings.

Trekking Distance: Approx. 10 km
Altitude Gain: 3,720 m (Horombo Hut) to 4,700 m (Kibo Hut)

Afternoon:

  • Upon arrival at Kibo Hut, take time to relax and prepare for the final summit push.
  • Dinner will be served early, and the guides will brief you on the summit attempt.
  • Try to rest as much as possible before starting the summit trek, which begins around midnight.

Early Morning:

  • Start the summit attempt at around midnight or 1:00 AM.
  • Hike up to Gilman’s Point (5,681 m) on the crater rim. The trek is slow but steady, and the temperature can be very cold as you climb through the night.
  • After reaching Gilman’s Point, continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa.
  • Celebrate your achievement at the summit and take in the breathtaking views of the glaciers and the surrounding landscapes.

Summit Highlights:

  • Reach Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), enjoy the spectacular view and take memorable photos.
  • The final part of the trek is challenging, but the sense of accomplishment is incredible.

Morning:

  • After summiting, descend back down to Kibo Hut for a short rest and a light meal.
  • Continue your descent to Horombo Hut, where you’ll rest for the night.

Altitude Loss: 3,720 m (Horombo Hut) to 1,860 m (Marangu Gate)

Lunch:

  • Upon reaching Marangu Gate, you will complete your trek and sign out from the park.
  • Celebrate your achievement with a certificate (if you reached Stella Point or Uhuru Peak).
  • Transfer back to Moshi for a well-deserved hot shower and relaxation after your climb.
