The Umbwe Route is a short, steep and scenic route which focus direct the summit from the south. It is the least used route on the mountain and also the most demanding.
This route offers spectacular views and a fast summit, but due to the latter it is not the best route in terms of acclimatization( most Wisk route).

Day 1: Arrival in Moshi
- Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO).
- Transfer to a hotel in Moshi for an orientation and equipment check.
- Overnight in Moshi.
Day 2: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp
- Transfer to Umbwe Gate, complete park formalities, and meet your guides and porters.
- Begin the challenging trek through dense rainforest.
- Hike to Umbwe Camp.
- Overnight camping.
Day 3: Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp
- Continue through the rainforest and into the heath and moorland zone.
- Arrive at Barranco Camp.
- Overnight camping.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
- Climb the Barranco Wall, a challenging but exhilarating section of the route.
- Trek to Karanga Camp, with stunning views of the southern ice fields.
- Overnight camping.
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
- Ascend to Barafu Camp, the last stop before the summit.
- Rest, hydrate, and prepare for the summit attempt.
- Overnight camping at Barafu Camp.
Day 6: Summit Day – Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and descent to Mweka Camp
- Begin the summit attempt at midnight, reaching Uhuru Peak at sunrise.
- Descend back to Barafu Camp and then to Mweka Camp.
- Celebrate your accomplishment!
- Overnight camping at Mweka Camp.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate and return to Moshi
- Descend to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificates.
- Transfer to your hotel in Moshi for a well-deserved rest and celebration.
- Overnight in Moshi
